Ceres’ Marin project has been creating a healthy community around whole, sustainable food since the fall of 2010. They do it by bringing local teens into the kitchen, connecting them with healthy food knowledge and real cooking skills, and giving them a chance to learn and to give back to their larger community. They’ve prepared thousands of delicious, nourishing, free meals that sustain Marin families who are struggling with the challenges of serious illness such as cancer. Each week colorful meal bags are packed with these carefully crafted meals and delivered by caring volunteers to Marin client families.
Since April 2014, we have been located at the Community Action Marin kitchen in San Rafael’s Vineyard Business Park. On Wednesday and Thursday afternoons teens from Marin middle and high schools gather there to learn to build a healthy community around healthful food. They don Ceres’ green aprons or the chef coat they’ve earned, and under the direction of chef Trudy Schafer and volunteer adult chef mentors, they learn about the healing power of whole food and the value of a sustainable food system.
We are grateful to our supportive partners! Whole Foods Market donates food and provides meal bags, as well as supporting Ceres with a $1 donation from the sale of Ceres branded salads from the Deli case. Silk Road Teas, a San Rafael Company, has launched the Ceres Collection, a selection of premium organic teas that carry the Ceres message and help support our work with every purchase. Every week Gourmet Mushrooms donates beautiful mushrooms that add important nutrition to our clients’ meals.
This event will be a fun fundraiser with live music, wonderful local food served by the Ceres Teen Chefs, wine & other beverages, a silent auction and more.
Volunteers are the heart of our program. Teens between 14 and 19 learn cooking skills. Experienced cooks mentor youth in the kitchen. Delivery Angels pick up the finished meals every Thursday evening and take them to homes from Sausalito to Novato to nourish our neighbors and relieve some of the stress of a serious illness. Others pick up food donations, help prep containers and pack meal bags, as well as helping to raise funds to support the program and promoting Ceres' good work throughout the community.
If you, or someone you know, would like to join our volunteer effort – our youth team on Wednesday or Thursday afternoons, or to deliver meals once or twice a month on Thursdays – please let us know. You can contact on of our volunteer coordinators, or attend an upcoming Volunteer Orientation:
