Ceres’ Marin project has been creating a healthy community around whole, sustainable food since the fall of 2010. We do it by bringing local teens into the kitchen, connecting them with healthy food knowledge and real cooking skills, and giving them a chance to give back to their larger community. The teens at Ceres have prepared thousands of delicious, nourishing and free meals that sustain Marin families who are struggling with the challenges of serious illness such as cancer. Each week colorful meal bags are packed with these carefully crafted meals and delivered by caring volunteers to our client families.
On Wednesday and Thursday afternoons teens from Marin middle and high schools converge on the Jackson Café kitchen at Whistlestop in downtown San Rafael. There they don Ceres’ green aprons or chef coats they’ve earned. Under the direction of chef Trudy Schafer and volunteer adult chef mentors, they learn about the healing power of real food.
We are grateful to our supportive partners! Whole Foods Market donates food and provides meal bags, as well as supporting Ceres with a $1 donation from the sale of Ceres branded salads from the Deli case. Silk Road Teas, a San Rafael Company, has launched the Ceres Collection, a selection of premium organic teas that carry the Ceres message and help support our work with every purchase. Every week Gourmet Mushrooms donates beautiful royal trumpet mushrooms for the clients’ meals.
Volunteers are the heart of our program. Teens between 13 and 19 learn cooking skills. Experienced cooks mentor youth in the kitchen. Delivery Angels pick up the finished meals every Thursday evening and take them to homes from Sausalito to Novato to nourish our neighbors and relieve some of the stress of a serious illness. Others pick up food donations, help prep containers and pack meal bags, as well as helping to raise funds to support the program and promoting Ceres' good work throughout the community.
If you, or someone you know, would like to join our volunteer effort – our youth team on Wednesday or Thursday afternoons, or to deliver meals once or twice a month on Thursdays – please let us know. Click on one of the email addresses below and tell us how you'd like to help!
These are free programs – free to our youth, and the meals we deliver are both free and delicious. But it takes your support to make it possible. We welcome your tax deductible donations at our address below or donate online by clicking the button (to go to our PayPal page).
