Ceres is now in our third year in Marin, having proudly passed the 16,000-meal mark in delivering delicious, healthful free meals to our neighbors who are battling serious health crises. We’ve brought more than 120 local teens into the healthy food community of our Ceres kitchen in San Rafael where they learn about real, whole food each week as they give back to their community. In 2012 alone our teen chefs volunteered more than 1,500 hours of their time learning about food and its connection to health as they prepared nourishing meals for clients. More than 120 families have benefitted from delicious, supportive, nutrient dense meals skillfully prepared and delivered with care.
Every Wednesday and Thursday afternoon, the Jackson Café kitchen at Whistlestop in downtown San Rafael is a busy scene where local teens from throughout Marin work under the direction of chef Trudy Schafer and adult volunteer mentors. They prepare nourishing, health-supportive meals that are delivered by volunteers at no cost to clients experiencing health crises. Our teens learn valuable cooking skills, connect with the power of whole, nutritious food, and feel the simple satisfaction of giving back to the community. The program draws youth from all neighborhoods and diverse backgrounds while emphasizing teamwork and an understanding of the powerful role nourishment plays in restoring health and building community.
Volunteers are the heart of our program. Teens between 13 and 19 learn cooking skills. Experienced cooks mentor youth in the kitchen. Delivery Angels pick up the finished meals every Thursday evening and take them to homes from Sausalito to Novato to nourish our neighbors and relieve some of the stress of a serious illness. Others pick up food donations, help prep containers and pack meal bags, as well as helping to raise funds to support the program and promoting Ceres' good work throughout the community.
If you, or someone you know, would like to join our volunteer effort – our youth team on Wednesday or Thursday afternoons, or to deliver meals once or twice a month on Thursdays – please let us know. Click on one of the email addresses below and tell us how you'd like to help!
These are free programs – free to our youth, and the meals we deliver are both free and delicious. But it takes your support to make it possible. We welcome your tax deductible donations at our address below or donate online by clicking the button (to go to our PayPal page).

Thanks to the generous support of Whole Foods Markets, you can now enjoy salads made from Ceres’ delicious and healthful recipes just by stopping by the deli department in any Marin Whole Foods store and looking for the salads with the Ceres logo in either the pre-pack display or at the chef deli counter. Every purchase makes a donation to our Ceres Marin program.
Beginning in February another generous sponsor will support us through product sales linked to donations. Silk Road Teas, a San Rafael company, is launching The Ceres Collection of premium organic teas. Watch for a roll-out at Whole Foods’ stores!
The fresh organic produce in each week’s meals comes from our producer partners including Gourmet Mushrooms, Inc., Full Belly Farm, Feather River Farm, Tomatero Organic, Orchard Farms, Green gage Farm and many of the producer/farmers at the Novato Farmers Market. We also thank our generous partners at the Straus Family Creamery, Buddha Salt Company, and Della Fattoria for their donations, and Western Boat and Tackle for their generous discount on fresh fish.
